In today’s world, the attention given to the care of the aged is largely unimpressive. The young folks who ought to fend for the needs of this dependent class tend to feel that they are a burden and, in most cases, ignore their craving for love, attention, and dignity.
Old people’s homes are predominantly for aged people that cannot live with their children for some reason or are better off living there. It is usually for a fee and under the supervision of nurses and caregivers.
The Synergistic Homies paid a visit to Old People’s Home Yaba, Lagos on the 25th of July 2021 as part of our community service initiative. We had planned an interactive session with the residents to engage them and possibly learn from them as they share nuggets from their life experiences. We also intended to assist the caregivers with chores they deem we could assist with during the visit.
However, we were not permitted to have contact with the residents due to Covid-19 control measures. The caregivers underscored that aged people are more susceptible to the virus due to their low level of immunity, hence the decision to restrict their contact with people as much as practicably possible.
We had a productive outreach as we engaged with the caregivers who were very welcoming, waved the residents from the window side, and heartily presented items to cater to the needs of the residents. The items include adult diapers, toiletries, disinfectants, and games for leisure (Ayo and Ludo.
